Orange - City of Gold ™
Welcome Orange and the Central Highlands
of New South Wales Australia
We love our city and this site is designed to showcase what we have, enjoy and wish to share with friends and visitors.
Rather that wait until the site was completed we decided to make it a work-in-progress so that we can start the journey.
We would appreciate your comments and contributions so don't hesitate to email the editor.

Why the city of gold?
It all started in 1851 when gold was discovered at Ophir just a short distance from Orange.
The story of gold is a fascinating one and there will be more later.
Why was the then village named Orange?
Thanks to Major Thomas Mitchell, he decided that Blackman's Swamp was not up to standard and he would rename it Orange after his friend the Duke of Orange.
Another fascinating story we'll tell you about later.
Lets get started with where to stay
As we gather more local knowledge and information we'll add to this and many more sections. Please email us if any details are incorrect.
